We know that we feel physical feelings through electrical impulses that send information to our brains through our nervous system. Once we die, we no longer feel pain due to the lack of a physical nervous system and, oh yeah, a brain. How could we ‘feel’ the excruciating flames of hell for eternity? Does God make you feel this torment for all eternity out of pure malice because you wouldn’t worship him?

This is the 16th question of 50 Questions Christians Can’t Answer.

Literary devices are used by writers to help them convey a message. As you read the Bible or any other work, you will come across two types of literary devices. One is unavoidable, the other is optional. Literary elements are considered inescapable. They include setting, characters, mood, and theme. Literary techniques, on the other hand, are optional and help the writer express meaning to the reader. Literary techniques include metaphor, simile, alliteration, and hyperbole, all of which may allow the reader a greater understanding of the message the writer wishes to convey.

The Bible is made up of 66 different books with 40 authors contributing their writing styles over a period of 1500 years. It should come as no surprise when an author is expressing the consequences of hell, life after death, and an immaterial realm, that he would employ the use of metaphors and other literary techniques to convey a meaning that would be difficult to grasp.

Got Questions responded, “The variety and symbolic nature of descriptors do not lessen hell, however—just the opposite, in fact. Their combined effect describes a hell that is worse than death, darker than darkness, and deeper than any abyss. Hell is a place with more wailing and gnashing of teeth than any single descriptor could ever portray. Its symbolic descriptors bring us to a place beyond the limits of our language—to a place far worse than we could ever imagine.”1

Where does the Bible say we will “feel the excruciating flames of hell for eternity”? That was the first question that came to mind when I read #16 in his list of 50 questions Christians Can’t Answer. Well, it doesn’t. There are several passages that imply that and I list a few below.

Mark 9:43, “If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out.” (NIV)

Revelation 14:11, “And the smoke of their torment will rise forever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.” (NIV)

Revelation 20:10, And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are and shall be tormented day and night forever and ever. (NIV)

Matthew 18:9, And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell. (NIV)

Matthew 25:41, “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” (NIV)

How we end up ‘feeling’ hell is debatable. Taking the literary techniques expressed by the authors as literal meaning is silly, and to imply that would be absurd.

You will not find popular media or Hollywood implying we have a soul or any kind of immaterial realm after death, at least not in any kind of Christian religious sense of the word. A Time magazine article, which was advocating stem cell research stated, “These [embryos] are microscopic groupings of a few differentiated cells. There is nothing human about them, except potential, [or] if you choose to believe it, a soul.”2 Another example J.P. Moreland gave in his book The Soul, was from a popular T.V. show The Walking Dead. Moreland wrote, “In the first season’s final episode, a scientist shows a group of ordinary people a video of the inside workings of a live human brain. It looks like a complex web of wires and nodes, with a multitude of flashing lights traveling to and fro. He then declares matter-of-factly that all of the electrical activity that they see is actually the real you. When those ‘lights’ go off, you cease to exist.”3

As for the second part of the question “Does God make you feel this torment for all eternity out of pure malice because you wouldn’t worship him?” There are a couple of things to consider.

First, God does not make anyone enter hell. Everyone is given a choice, and He will not force anyone to live in His presence.

Secondly, scripture makes it clear what will happen to those to sin and do not accept the gift of salvation.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (NIV)

2 Thessalonians 1:9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might. (NIV)

Ezekiel 18:4 For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child—both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will die. (NIV)

Ezekiel 18:20 The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them. (NIV)

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 5:24 Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. (NIV)

John 10:27-28 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. (NIV)

As you read these verses and many others you clearly see there are two options. Two fates. Two choices. Life and death. Life for those who accept the gift God has to offer, and death for those who don’t. John 3:16 made it quite clear some will have eternal life, others will perish. These verses say nothing about living in some kind of eternal torture or punishment.

Some may quote Revelation 20:10 as a pushback on eternal punishment. “And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” The Greek word forever is ‘aion’ which does not necessarily mean unending. It can be an unspecified period of time, and our word eon (a geologic period of time) comes from that Greek word aion.

In 1Cor 2:6 “We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.” Paul uses the same Greek word for age and you can see it does not mean an unending period of time. (NIV)

These questions, and others you may encounter, presuppose a world view that embeds a conclusion before you can even respond. They are often one-sided and uncharitable toward the person being asked the question, but if you sit down and give them some thought, you will find most can be easily responded to.

Reading Time: 5 minutesGod wants everyone to worship and follow him and, if they don’t, they burn in hell for all eternity. What does this type of attitude say about his character? By definition, he would be described as a tyrant.

My wife told me my titles, 43 Questions Christian’s can’t answer, 42 Questions Christian’s can’t answer, 41 Questions… are boring.  So I changed it. This question deals with unbelief, choices and consequences, authority, and love and it is the 10th one on the list of 50.

If we were to define God as an all powerful, all knowing, creator of the universe, and final source of moral authority, why would we not choose to follow and worship him? Why would anyone even begin to question a being who is the cause of their own existence, creator of the universe and time itself? The problem is, those who ask this question do not believe God is all those things. If they believe in God at all, it would be a lower case ‘g’ god.

The god they consider might be a powerful being, maybe, but more likely in their view, we are all just chance, as if chance has creative power. Chance requires elements to be put in place for us to look at the odds of an event taking place.

No doubt if we were to look at a human who demanded we worship and follow him or we would be tortured and killed, he would be defined as a tyrant. Some names in history come to mind, Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Mussolini, and Bin Laden, but we are not talking about dictators. We are talking about a holy, perfect, just, and righteous God.

I know some exclaim, “What kind of choice is that? Fall on my knees and worship God, or burn forever.” If you give it a moment’s thought, you would realize that life is full of choices with consequences. For example, if we pay our taxes, we are allowed to continue in our daily routine. If we don’t pay our taxes we are fined. If we continue not paying our taxes, we then enjoy free room and board, free health care, and the company of others who have biceps the size of small watermelons.

After choices and consequences, this kind of question deals in part with the issue of authority. Imagine that a young man punches someone at school. We have rules and laws against that kind of behavior in school. Depending on the situation, the young man might find himself in the principal’s office, or expelled from school. What if the same young man decided to punch a police officer? No doubt, he would at least find himself in jail for his actions. Finally, what if this same fellow punched the President of the United States? The consequence would be serious indeed. If you just threaten the President, it falls under a ‘Class D’ federal offense, with 5 to 10 years in prison and a possible $250,000 fine.

In fact, in 2010, Johnny Logan Spencer was sentenced to 33 months in jail for posting a poem about assassinating the president.  He did not lay a hand on the president and he is in jail for nearly 3 years. 1 Why is that?

It should be obvious that consequences become more serious depending on the authority of the figure. We understand that and don’t question it, unless it involves God. For some reason, when God demands a consequence commensurate to His position, atheists cry foul and label Him as a tyrant. He is an all loving, all knowing, all powerful, eternal being, who demands justice. In fact, I am not sure stating He demands justice is accurate; some might say His character requires it. He can do no other.

Finally, there’s a mindset that an all loving God could not send someone to hell for eternity. Holding people accountable is not a popular mindset in today’s culture. Ziggy Marley, son of Bob Marley, wrote a song, “Love Is My Religion”. The lyrics read:

I don’t condemn, I don’t convert.
Yeah, this is a calling, have you heard?
Bring all the lovers to the fort
Cause no one is gonna lose their soul.

No one is gonna lose their soul? Why? Because an all loving God could not possibly send someone to hell for eternity, and we have a generation of people banking on that misguided understanding of the person-hood of God.

Ravi Zacharias and Norman Geisler wrote the book, Who Made God. In it we find this explanation, “God’s justice demands that sin be punished, but his love compels him to save sinners. So by Christ’s death for us, his justice is satisfied and his love released. Thus, there is no contradiction between absolute justice and unconditional love. To illustrate, God is like the judge who, after passing out the punishment to the guilty defendant, laid aside his robe, stood alongside the convicted, and paid the fine for him.” 2

Alister McGrath put it this way, “Like a skilled physician, Christianity offers a diagnosis of the human situation – not in order to pass judgment and then pass on, but to identify what must be done to transform the situation. Identification of the malady is the essential precondition for a cure.” 3 He went on to say, “Christianity does not simply make sense to us; it also makes sense of us.” 4

In Seeking Allah Finding Jesus, Nabeel Qureshi told a story about his best friend David, who had shared the doctrine of substitutionary atonement. If you can imagine, it was a conversation between a Christian, Buddhist, and a Muslim in a smoothie bar. David, (the Christian), shared, “A better analogy would be a son who has stolen from his father’s business. If after wasting the goods, the son returns to the father and sincerely seeks forgiveness, it is within the father’s right to forgive him. But not all would be settled yet; the accounts haven’t been balanced. Someone has to take the hit for the stolen goods. If the father wants, he has every right to pay for his son’s debt from his own account.” 5

How many tyrants will take on the debt of his people? On the contrary, tyrants put their people in debt and bondage to benefit their own position and power, with no compassion or concern for those he is in position to rule. Yet God takes on the debt of his people in the person of Christ.

You can think about God in many different ways, but he is not just a force in the universe. Although he does not have a body like you and I, he is a person. If you are a human, you are a person, but not every person is a human. Angels, for example, are persons. God is certainly a person, but he is perfect in his person-hood. 6 As persons, we have many qualities that God has, but unlike us, his reasons, his intentions, are morally perfect.

There is nothing wrong with requiring justice for wrong doing, and the greater the person wronged, the greater the consequence. Walking away from, turning your back on, ignoring, the greatest being, who is responsible for all creation, would reap serious consequences indeed.

Cramming for the final

Sounds like a marriage that if you say one wrong thing, your mate will ask for a divorce. Or the first time a child does something wrong, they are shipped off to the orphanage. Not a lot of room for error and comes off sounding very unforgiving. It is probable the person asking such a question is being rhetorical. By that I mean, they are simply asking the question to make a point; they are not really interested in your answer. Is the Pope Catholic? Do trees grow in the woods? Do I look fat in this dress? If you’re married, you better know how to answer that one. Or, one that would fit the above question, “You don’t expect me to actually believe any idiotic answer you come up with, do you?” You could approach such a question by asking a question in return. For example, “Do you believe in eternity?” or “Is there such a thing as a crime?” or “Can someone be punished for eternity, and if so, who would be doing the punishing?” Depending on your question, and their response, you have quite a few different possible directions. If it is determined they don’t even believe in God, you could bring up the argument that everything created must have a cause, everything that has a design has a designer, or everything built must have a builder. But I want to discuss the question from the perspective of a skeptic, someone who may or may not believe in God, but honestly can’t understand why they would be punished for a single crime, and that punishment would be everlasting. You might even struggle answering that question. If you’re one, don’t feel bad, you’re not alone. Most Christians don’t spend their time reading about and thinking about, how to respond to such difficult questions. Also sitting down, and typing out a thoughtful response, is a very different matter than responding to difficult questions on the fly.

What crime would deserve an eternal punishment? Most of us, when we first consider such an event, focus incorrectly on the crime itself. Would Hitler deserve an eternity in Hell for the slaughter of six million Jews? How about Stalin in his 30 year reign? Forced labor camps, masses of peasants and involuntary exile, World War II losses, political crimes, famine due to government policies, etc. Estimates range from 30 to 60 million. Would Stalin deserve an eternity of punishment? Without a doubt, Stalin was one of the worst, yet if you really think about it, eternity is a long time for 30 years of murdering even tens of millions of people. Maybe a year for every person killed would sound more reasonable, that way Stalin could have up to 60 million years in hell. Any time off for good behavior?

A couple weeks ago, Todd, our youth group leader, used a rope as an example of eternity. It was a great visual aid that he shared with everyone on Sunday. He had one end of a rope in his hands, (maybe six inches), wrapped in what looked like black electrical tape. The rest of the rope ran across the room and disappeared out the window. We were asked to imagine the rope that went out the window, continuing on forever. Around the earth, past the moon, sun, out of our galaxy, through and past other distant galaxies, going on forever. Todd then talked about how we live for this miniscule 6 inches of rope, when we should be concerned with the eternal end. When you put a crime or crimes in that perspective, it makes it even less palatable or reasonable that someone should be punished for eternity because of a deed or deeds they committed within those 6 inches of rope. If the ropes does not work for you, picture someone, after 70 years of deeds, being punished for billions and billions of endless suffering years. Does not sound fair to me.

As I said, a common mistake made when looking at this question is focusing on the crime, and not the judge. Ask any trial lawyer, one of the first questions they will ask is who the judge will be during the trial. Knowing the judge will often determine strategy and tactics used in the course of the trial. As important as knowing the judge is considering who the crime was committed against. Ray Comfort explained it this way in, The Defender’s Guide For Life’s Toughest Questions. Say you said you were going to beat your dog, it is doubtful there would be any consequence. Now if you threatened to beat up a police officer, then you could expect an arrest and an investigation, which could result in some jail time. Finally, if you were to threaten to beat up the President of the United States, then the result would be swift, severe, and possibly years in prison. The threat was the same across the board, but it was the individual, who was much more significant in each case, that made the difference.

The John Gill Commentary put it this way.
“Their excuses will not be regarded, their pleas will be of no avail, their pretensions to interest in Christ, and love to him, will be set aside; the sentence will remain irrevocable, and there will be no appeal from it, for there is no higher tribunal to bring the cause before; judgment having passed, the execution of it immediately follows: these goats, or formal professors, shall be obliged, whether they will or not, to depart from the presence of Christ; the angels will be ordered to take and cast them into everlasting burnings; they will be driven by them into hell, the place appointed for them; where they shall endure (yxun vnwe) ‘everlasting punishment’…”

Ouch! Sounds like bad news if you offend the Eternal God and Creator of the universe. It is not the crime that increases time served, but who the crime offends. In this case, the one being offended is not ‘only’ the judge, but the jury as well. Ask the skeptics if they have ever lied? If they are being honest they will say yes, and that of course makes them a liar. Ask them if they have ever cheated, again most will say yes, and that makes them a cheater. You can continue asking them if they have used the Lord’s name in vain, lusted after another person, or hated anyone. You see, Christ did not draw the line at the acts, but also the thoughts. Point out to them you are in the same boat, no one can escape the crimes we just listed, but Christ Himself who lived a perfect, flawless life, and who paid the price for our guilt. Matthew said in 5:28 “If a man has lustful thoughts of another woman he has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” John said, “Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.” Some may object, stating they don’t do these things very often, but it only takes one lie to become a liar. One event of cheating to become a cheater. Hating one person to be a murder.

Once they understand the consequence of their crime or sin against a perfect and holy God, and that every crime, no matter how small, must be dealt with, then they can see how important the figure of Christ is and what he did for us on the cross. Our God is perfect and holy, and sin cannot abide in his presence. We are all sinners and are incapable of leading perfect lives, but the blood of Christ washes us perfectly clean so we can spend eternity with the judge and jury.

A single crime that deserves an eternity of punishment still sounds pretty harsh, but what about that we have but one decision to make to ensure an eternity of joy and everlasting peace? You never hear an atheist point out the fact that so many, when they embrace Christ, understanding their wretched and hopeless condition, get what seems to be a ‘get out of jail free card’ for eternity. What if Hitler and Stalin embraced Christ before their deaths? As unlikely as it sounds, had it happened we would spend eternity with them. Sounds distasteful doesn’t it? Maybe now you have an impression what an atheist thinks/feels when we say they are going to spend an eternity in hell if they don’t accept Christ as their Lord and Savior. It does sound like a single question final, and if you get it wrong, you lose in a very big way. True, but if you only make one right decision, then you also get to spend eternity in heaven.

Greg Koukl explains that Christianity is offensive enough without our making conditional statements which not only ignore the circumstances of the person asking the question, but that our reply can have eternal consequences. If you don’t know an answer, admit it, or maybe ask some questions yourself while you reflect a considerate reply. They may be more open to the Good News than what you think, so your reply is important.

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” 1 Peter 3:15
